Chapter 15 - Fire at Greystone

The hatch burst open.
Cold night air rushed into the tunnel.
Rosa's face appeared above them.
"Move!"
Ethan pushed Mara out first.
They emerged behind the greenhouse, fifty yards from the mansion. Flames were already licking from a second-floor window.
Police officers shouted near the front drive.
Rosa grabbed Mara. "Are you hurt?"
"I'm okay. Where's Keene?"
"Gone."
"Gone?"
"Someone cut him loose before the fire started."
Bianca stumbled out of the hatch last and collapsed on the grass.
Rosa saw her and went rigid.
Bianca looked away.
"I am sorry," Bianca whispered.
Rosa's face hardened. "Save it for court."
A police cruiser rolled toward the greenhouse.
Ethan raised both hands.
"No sudden movements," he said.
Chief Warren stepped from the cruiser. Mara recognized his name from Richard's records. He was one of Nolan's men.
"Ethan Harrow!" Warren shouted. "On your knees!"
Ethan obeyed slowly.
Mara stepped forward. "Chief, we have evidence--"
"Ma'am, step away from him."
"Your name is in the ledger."
Warren's face twitched.
Wrong thing to say.
His hand moved toward his holster.
Bianca suddenly ran.
Not away from the police.
Toward the greenhouse.
"Bianca!" Mara shouted.
Bianca smashed a flowerpot through the side window, reached inside, and pulled a red emergency lever.
A deafening alarm began screaming across the estate.
The front gates unlocked automatically.
Outside, news vans were arriving.
Ethan looked at Bianca in surprise.
"I called reporters too," she said. "I know how Nolan survives. He controls rooms. So I made sure this wouldn't stay in one room."
Chief Warren cursed and backed toward his cruiser.
Cameras turned toward him.
Mara held up the black ledger.
"Chief! Want to explain why your name is on thirty-seven payments from Halcyon Municipal Partners?"
Reporters surged closer.
Warren got into his cruiser and sped away.
For the first time, Mara thought they might actually win.
Then Ethan's phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
Nolan's voice came through.
"You have my ledger. I have something of yours."
A frightened voice cried in the background.
"Mara?"
May you like
Rosa went pale.
"That's my daughter," she whispered.
