Chapter 4 - The Trust

Ethan drove in silence for nearly a mile.

Mara finally said, "What trust?"

His hands tightened on the steering wheel.

"My father's estate."

"And why does my baby matter to your father's estate?"

"Because my father never trusted Nolan or me to keep the company together. He created a family trust before he died. Each of us controls our half while we're alive. If one of us dies without children, the other brother gets voting control. If one of us has a child, that share stays in that bloodline."

Mara stared ahead. "So Nolan thought you were dead."

"Legally missing. He filed to have me declared dead next month."

"And then he gets your half."

"Yes."

"But if you have a child..."

"He doesn't."

Mara's stomach turned.

Ethan looked sick saying it aloud. "That's why Bianca was terrified."

"You think they would hurt a baby over company shares?"

"I think Nolan has already destroyed people for less."

When Ethan parked behind a closed gas station, Mara reached for the door.

"I'm going back for my things, then I'm leaving."

"You can't go alone."

"You don't get to decide that. You disappeared after one night. You lied about your name. Now you show up and tell me my unborn child is some kind of corporate obstacle."

Ethan got out but kept his distance. "You're right."

That stopped her.

"I should have found you sooner. I should have told you who I was. I was scared, and fear made me a coward. But I won't lie to you again."

Her phone buzzed with an email from Greystone's household account.

TERMINATION OF EMPLOYMENT -- EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY.

Bianca had fired her.

Another message followed from the estate manager.

Your personal belongings will be boxed and delivered within seven business days.

Mara swore. "My mother's necklace is in that room."

"Then we get it."

"We?"

Ethan nodded. "And while we're there, I get the ledger."

"Absolutely not."

"Mara, if I can prove Nolan framed me, I can stop him from controlling the trust. That protects you too."

She hated that he was right.

By dusk, they were parked on a wooded hill overlooking Greystone.

The mansion glowed below them like a palace.

Then Mara saw something impossible.

A light turned on in her third-floor bedroom.

May you like

A shadow crossed the curtains.

Someone was searching her room.
