Chapter 2 - The Man Bianca Feared

The rain suddenly felt colder.
Mara looked from Ethan to Bianca. "What does she mean, you're dead?"
Ethan stopped beside her but did not touch her until she nodded. Then he put one hand lightly beneath her elbow and helped steady her.
Bianca recovered first. She always did.
"This is insane," she said. "Mara, you have no idea who this man is."
"Apparently neither do I."
Ethan's jaw tightened. "My full name is Ethan Harrow."
Mara stared at him.
Harrow.
The name engraved on the mansion where Mara cleaned bathrooms, polished silver, and carried Bianca breakfast every morning.
"Nolan is my brother," Ethan said.
Mara took a step away. "You told me your last name was Reed."
"It was my mother's maiden name. I was hiding."
"From your brother?"
"From people working for him."
Bianca crossed her arms. "He disappears for a year after stealing six million dollars, and now we're supposed to trust him?"
Ethan looked at her. "I didn't steal it."
"The police disagreed."
"The police were given forged records."
Mara pressed two fingers to her temple. "Stop. Both of you."
A small cramp pulled low in her abdomen. Ethan noticed. "Are you hurt?"
"I'm fine."
His eyes dropped again to her stomach. "How far along are you?"
Mara swallowed. "Twelve weeks."
Ethan counted backward in his head. His face changed.
Bianca saw it too.
"Oh, this is perfect," she muttered.
Mara looked at Ethan. "Yes. The timing is what you think."
He opened his mouth, but no words came.
Bianca gave a nervous laugh. "Congratulations, Ethan. You came back from the dead just in time to ruin everything."
"What everything?" Mara asked.
Bianca's gaze flicked toward the cemetery road.
Headlights appeared through the rain.
A black SUV rolled slowly past the gate, then stopped.
Ethan's entire posture changed.
"Mara," he said, low and urgent, "we need to leave. Now."
"Why?"
The rear door of the SUV opened.
A man in a gray suit stepped out.
Bianca smiled for the first time since Ethan appeared.
"Too late," she said.

Ethan grabbed Mara's hand.
"Run."
