Chapter 18 - Bianca's Last Secret

Nolan survived. A maintenance platform caught him before the river, leaving him with a broken leg, fractured ribs, and plenty of rage.

Keene was arrested at the bridge.

Chief Warren was arrested before sunrise.

By noon, federal agents had the real ledger, Richard's recording, Bianca's flash drive, and the memory chip from Ethan's lighter.

But Mara could not forget Nolan's last words.

Ask Bianca whose idea the baby was.

Bianca sat in an interview room at the county courthouse, wrapped in a gray blanket.

Mara entered with Ethan beside her, his arm bandaged.

"Tell me," Mara said.

Bianca looked exhausted. "Nolan was trying to hurt you."

"Then tell me the truth."

Bianca stared at the table.

"I arranged for you and Ethan to be at the same diner. I told you to take the hospital forms to our accountant that night, remember?"

Mara did.

It had seemed like a pointless late errand.

"And I had Keene send Ethan an anonymous message telling him someone with evidence would meet him there," Bianca continued.

Ethan's face hardened.

"But I never planned for you to sleep together. Nolan wanted Ethan distracted. That's all."

"Then why did he say 'whose idea the baby was'?"

Bianca's hands began trembling.

"Because after I learned you were pregnant, I didn't tell Nolan."

"Why?"

Bianca looked at Ethan. "I knew about the trust amendment. I knew a child could block Nolan from taking complete control."

Mara felt sick. "So you kept my pregnancy secret because my baby was useful to you."

"At first."

"There it is again. At first."

Bianca's eyes filled with tears. "Then I panicked. I thought Nolan was looking at you. I thought maybe the baby was his. I found the test and lost control."

"You hit me beside my mother's grave."

"I know."

"You don't get forgiveness because you're scared now."

Bianca nodded slowly. "I know that too."

Ethan placed a hand on Mara's shoulder.

A federal agent opened the door.

"Mr. Harrow, Ms. Ellis, we found something in Keene's apartment you need to see."

He placed a sealed evidence bag on the table.

Inside was an ultrasound photograph.

Mara's ultrasound.
