Chapter 19 - The Last Lie

Keene had been planning to use Mara's baby as leverage long before the cemetery confrontation.
The evidence in Keene's apartment included surveillance photos, Mara's work schedule, her mother's hospital bills, a map of the cemetery, and a file labeled CONTINGENCIES.
Mara sat across from Assistant U.S. Attorney Lena Ortiz as each page was placed on the table.
"Keene claims Nolan ordered the surveillance," Ortiz said.
"Do you believe him?" Ethan asked.
"We believe Keene is trying to reduce his sentence. We also have messages from Nolan telling him to 'keep the girl close' and 'confirm the child.'"
"Did Nolan know Ethan was the father?"
"He suspected it after Bianca accessed the trust documents."
Ortiz slid over one final printout.
It was a message from Nolan to Keene sent two days before the cemetery.
IF THE CHILD IS ETHAN'S, HANDLE THE PROBLEM BEFORE THE DECLARATION HEARING.
Mara read it twice.
Ethan stood so quickly his chair hit the wall.
"I'm going to kill him."
"No," Mara said.
He looked at her.
"That is exactly how men like Nolan win. They hurt you until you become something they can point at and say, 'See? I was right about him.'"
Ethan's fists slowly unclenched.
Mara took his hand.
"We beat him alive, in court, with every lie exposed."
Three weeks later, cameras packed the courthouse steps. Nolan arrived on crutches in handcuffs. Bianca came separately, cooperating but still facing serious charges.
As Mara walked inside, Bianca called her name.
Mara stopped.
"I'm sorry," Bianca said.
"I believe you're sorry," Mara said. "That doesn't erase what you did."
Bianca nodded, tears in her eyes.
Inside the courtroom, Nolan pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor began listing charges.
Fraud. Bribery. Conspiracy. Kidnapping. Witness intimidation. Attempted destruction of evidence.
Then came one charge nobody expected.
"Murder in the second degree in connection with the death of Richard Harrow."
Nolan stopped smiling.
Ethan looked at Mara.
Ortiz leaned over from the prosecution table and whispered, "The toxicology retest came back."
Mara's heart pounded.
"And?"
Ortiz looked toward Bianca.
"The drug in Richard's body wasn't in the bottle Bianca gave him."

Mara turned slowly.
"Then who poisoned him?"
