Chapter 10 - The Nurse Who Could Not Forget

Harold Vane had run, but Emma had lived.

That fact became the center of everything.

Detective Moreno traced the gas station footage frame by frame. Vane carried Emma away from the van and disappeared behind a concrete support column. Four minutes later, the van left without him.

At 4:38 a.m., a different camera captured Vane walking toward Saint Matthew's emergency entrance with the bundle still in his arms.

At 5:02, an internal ambulance took an unnamed infant to a pediatric eye clinic across town.

After that, the trail went dark.

"He saved her," Grace said.

Moreno nodded. "It looks that way."

"Then why falsify the records?"

"Maybe he was protecting her from whoever was in that van."

Jenna stared at the paused image of Vane running.

"Then where is he now?"

They got their first answer from a nurse named Olivia Chen.

She contacted the police after seeing a local news report about missing hospital records. She had worked the maternity wing the night Emma was born.

Olivia agreed to meet at the station.

She looked exhausted before the interview even began.

"I have thought about that baby every day for three years," she said.

Jenna gripped the edge of the table. "What happened to her?"

Olivia's eyes filled.

"You were hemorrhaging. We took Emma to the nursery because you needed surgery. She had obvious eye problems, but she was stable. Then Malcolm Reed came upstairs."

Jenna went white.

"He was there?"

"Yes. He argued with Mr. Vane in the hall. Reed said the situation had to be 'contained.' Vane told him the child was not a situation."

Alexander leaned closer. "Did you hear anything else?"

"Reed said Lucas had already been dealt with."

Jenna's chair scraped backward.

"What does that mean?"

Olivia shook her head. "I don't know."

She took a breath.

"Later, a doctor I had never seen signed an order transferring Emma for emergency testing. Mr. Vane tried to cancel it. Security removed him from the floor."

"And me?" Jenna asked.

Olivia's face crumpled.

"I was told to sedate you. I refused. Another nurse did it. When you woke up, they told you Emma died."

Jenna covered her face.

Grace reached across the table and took her hand.

Olivia pulled a small envelope from her purse.

"Mr. Vane gave me this before he vanished. He said if anyone ever came asking about the baby, I should open it. I was afraid. I kept it hidden."

Moreno opened the envelope with gloves.

Inside was a key.
