Chapter 19 - The Choice No One Could Win

The courtroom was quieter than Bright Hope House at nap time.

Grace had imagined this hearing for weeks and hated every version of it.

She did not want Jenna to lose.

She did not want Lucas to lose.

She did not want to lose Emma.

The judge asked Ellen Park for her recommendation.

Ellen stood.

"Emma is securely attached to Grace and Alexander Whitmore. She is also developing healthy bonds with Jenna Cole and Lucas Reed. Removing either relationship without necessity would create harm."

The judge leaned forward. "So what are you recommending?"

"Permanent guardianship with the Whitmores, open family status for Ms. Cole and Mr. Reed, shared medical decision participation, scheduled parenting time, and a path to expanded co-parenting as stability continues."

The courtroom shifted.

The judge looked at Jenna. "You understand that this means Emma's primary residence remains with the Whitmores?"

Jenna nodded.

"Yes."

"And you consent?"

Jenna looked at Grace.

"I lost my daughter because powerful people treated me like I didn't matter. I'm not going to repeat that by pretending the months Grace raised her don't matter."

Grace covered her mouth.

The judge turned to Lucas.

"Mr. Reed?"

"I spent three years with every choice made for me. I don't want Emma growing up watching adults fight over control. I want time with my daughter. I want to earn trust. I don't need to erase anyone to be her dad."

Alexander looked down.

The judge turned to him.

"Mr. Whitmore?"

Alexander's voice was rough.

"I used to think being a father meant being the person who could fix everything. I was wrong. I can't fix what happened to Emma. I can't fix what happened to Jenna or Lucas. I can show up. Every day. That's what I promise."

Then Grace was asked to speak.

She stood with tears already on her face.

"I love Emma enough to be afraid of losing her. But I hope I love her enough not to make my fear her burden. Jenna is her mother. Lucas is her father. Alexander and I are her parents too. If the law needs one clean box, our family may never fit inside it."

The judge was silent for a long moment.

Then she signed the order.

No one cheered.

They cried.

Outside the courthouse, Jenna handed Emma to Grace, then immediately took her back because it was her afternoon.

Grace laughed.

"This is going to be strange."

"Very," Jenna said.

Alexander's phone rang.

He answered and listened.

A smile slowly appeared.

"Miss Anna has a problem."

Grace frowned. "What kind?"

"Bright Hope House is out of room."

Jenna looked worried.

Alexander's smile widened.

"Not for children. For donations."

He looked at Grace.

"And apparently Lily has a business proposal."
