Chapter 12 - Bright Hope Under Attack

The front door of Bright Hope House hung crooked on one hinge.
Police lights flashed across the windows.
Grace jumped from the car before it fully stopped.
"Miss Anna!"
An officer blocked her. "Ma'am, you need to stay back."
"There are children in there."
"The children are safe."
"Where is Anna?"
The officer glanced toward an ambulance.
Grace ran.
Miss Anna sat on the back step wrapped in a gray blanket, a bandage above her eyebrow. Lily stood beside her holding her hand. Ethan leaned against her other shoulder.
Grace dropped to her knees.
"What happened?"
"I am fine," Miss Anna said.
"You are bleeding."
"It's a dramatic scratch."
"Anna."
The older woman sighed. "A man came through the office window. He went straight to the records room. I tried to stop him. He shoved me. Samuel hit the alarm button."
Grace looked at Samuel across the yard.
He stood beside a police officer, shaking.
She crossed to him and crouched.
"You were brave."
Samuel stared at her.
Then, for the first time since Grace had known him, a sound came from his throat.
Small. Rough. Frightened.
"Baby."
Grace froze.
Miss Anna covered her mouth.
Samuel pointed toward the office.
"Baby... file."
The intruder had been looking for Emma's records.
Detective Moreno arrived ten minutes later.
The thief had taken nothing obvious because the original paperwork had already been copied and turned over to police. But he had opened every cabinet connected to infant intake.
"He knew exactly what he wanted," Moreno said.
Then Lily tugged Grace's sleeve.
"The man smelled like oranges."
Grace blinked. "Oranges?"
Lily nodded. "Not real oranges. Like the cleaning spray in fancy bathrooms. Strong."
Moreno crouched beside her. "Anything else?"
"His shoes clicked. Hard shoes. And he breathed like this."
She imitated a faint whistle.
Miss Anna looked up sharply.
"Wait."
Everyone turned.
"Harold Vane used to come here before Emma arrived."
Moreno's eyes narrowed. "You knew him?"
"Not well. He donated supplies sometimes. He wore expensive leather shoes. And he had a breathing problem."
Grace stared at her.
"Are you saying Harold Vane broke in?"
"No."
Miss Anna's face had changed.
"I'm saying the man who broke in sounded exactly like him."
Moreno's phone buzzed.
She read the screen.
"Then we have a problem."
May you like
"What?"
"Harold Vane was found dead this morning in a motel three states away."
