Chapter 17 - The Lie Inside the Truth

Malcolm Reed walked into court wearing a navy suit and the expression of a man attending someone else's funeral.
He denied ordering Emma's removal.
He denied imprisoning Lucas.
He denied falsifying medical records.
And then his attorney produced a video.
Jenna appeared on the screen in a hospital bed.
Her face was pale. Her speech was slow.
A document rested on a clipboard in front of her.
A woman's voice asked, "Do you understand that you are surrendering parental rights?"
Jenna whispered, "Yes."
Grace felt the room tilt.
Jenna shot to her feet.
"I don't remember that!"
The judge ordered silence.
The video continued.
Jenna signed.
Reed's attorney stopped playback.
"My client maintains that Ms. Cole made a lawful choice and later regretted it. Harold Vane then interfered with the placement process, fabricated records, and created a false narrative to protect himself."
It was clean.
Too clean.
Dana leaned toward Grace. "Watch the time stamp."
Grace did.
2:08 a.m.
She remembered Olivia Chen's statement.
Jenna had been in surgery that night.
Dana stood.
"Your Honor, we request the original file and metadata. Immediately."
Reed's attorney objected.
The judge overruled him.
The hearing recessed.
Outside, Jenna was shaking with rage.
"He made me look like I threw her away."
Grace caught her shoulders.
"Look at me."
Jenna did.
"We know what happened to you. A video doesn't change that."
"What if the judge believes it?"
"Then we prove what it is."
Alexander joined them with Dana.
"The metadata is wrong," Dana said. "The file says it was created yesterday."
Jenna stared.
"Yesterday?"
"The visual time stamp was burned into the image. It isn't the original camera data."
Alexander almost smiled. "So they forged proof of a forgery."
"Maybe," Dana said. "We still need the source footage."
Detective Moreno arrived at a run.
"We have it."
She held up a flash drive.
Olivia Chen had found an old nursing station backup in her personal storage - copied years ago because she feared records would be altered.
The original hallway video showed Jenna being wheeled into surgery at 1:52 a.m.
At 2:08 a.m., she was still in the operating room.
The woman in Reed's surrender video could not have been Jenna.
Moreno's expression was hard.
"And there is more."
"What?"
"We enhanced the fake video."
She turned the laptop.

In a mirror behind the hospital bed stood a man supervising the recording.
Malcolm Reed.
