Chapter 18 - The Day Emma Opened Her Eyes

Malcolm Reed was arrested before sunset.

The charges began with fraud, unlawful restraint, evidence tampering, and conspiracy. More followed as investigators linked him to payments, falsified files, and North Ridge.

The case would take months, maybe years.

Grace stopped waiting for justice to feel finished.

Emma's surgery was the next morning.

At the hospital, the four adults sat together without pretending the arrangement was normal.

It wasn't.

It was messy, painful, and real.

Lucas bounced one knee until Alexander put a hand on it.

"You're shaking the whole row."

"Sorry."

"Don't apologize. Just shake quieter."

Lucas laughed weakly.

Jenna paced.

Grace stared at the operating room doors.

Two hours later, Dr. Shah came out.

"The procedure went well."

Grace's lungs finally worked again.

"Can she see?"

Dr. Shah held up a hand. "We won't know yet. Swelling, bandages, healing. Remember what we discussed."

Everyone nodded.

Three days later, one bandage came off.

Emma blinked hard.

The room stayed dim.

Grace was holding her.

Jenna stood on one side. Lucas and Alexander stood behind them.

Dr. Shah moved a soft light from left to right.

Emma's eyes shifted.

Barely.

But they shifted.

Jenna gasped.

Grace began crying.

"Don't test her for us," Dr. Shah warned gently. "Let her experience it."

Grace nodded.

She whispered, "Hi, baby."

Emma turned toward her voice, as she always had.

Then something new happened.

Her gaze paused near Grace's face.

Not directly on her eyes.

Not clearly.

But close.

Emma smiled.

Grace pressed her lips together to keep from sobbing too loudly.

Later, Dr. Shah explained that Emma seemed to have some light and large-shape perception. More development might come. It might not.

Grace did not ask for percentages.

She had learned to stop turning Emma's future into a measurement.

That evening, they returned home.

At the nursery doorway, Emma reacted to the bright window and then reached for the familiar textured star hanging beside her crib.

Sight did not replace touch.

It joined it.

Alexander stood behind Grace.

"She looked toward you."

Grace smiled through tears. "She knew me before she could."

Her phone buzzed.

A message from Ellen Park.

The final guardianship hearing had been scheduled.

May you like

Grace's smile faded.

In one week, the court would decide where Emma would live permanently.
