Chapter 9 - What Happened in the Ambulance

The recording was only nineteen seconds long.

A man's voice.

A second voice farther away.

A metal door slamming.

Then the sentence that made Grace sick.

The blind baby was never supposed to survive the transfer.

Detective Moreno replayed it twice.

"This could be planted to scare you," she said. "Or it could be evidence. Either way, nobody touches this recorder again."

Jenna pressed both hands over her mouth.

Grace wanted to hold her and could not make herself move.

Then Jenna did something Grace did not expect.

She crossed the room and hugged her.

"Don't let them near her," Jenna whispered.

Grace's fear cracked open.

She hugged back.

"I won't."

The DNA result arrived the next morning.

Probability of maternity: 99.9998 percent.

Jenna was Emma's biological mother.

The court immediately appointed an independent guardian for Emma and froze the final adoption hearing.

Grace sat through the legal conference with her hands under the table because they would not stop trembling.

The guardian, Ellen Park, spoke calmly.

"My only client is Emma. Not the Whitmores. Not Ms. Cole. We are going to determine what protects this child while the criminal investigation continues."

Grace nodded.

Jenna nodded too.

Neither woman looked at the other.

Later, Dr. Shah called with a date for Emma's detailed eye imaging. She again warned them not to build hope around a medical outcome.

"We won't," Grace said.

She meant it.

That afternoon, Moreno found the transport company that had moved Emma from Saint Matthew's to Bright Hope House.

The listed driver, Kevin Marsh, denied transporting any infant that day.

"My signature was copied," he said.

The listed attendant had never existed.

But a traffic camera had captured the transport van leaving the hospital.

At 4:17 a.m.

It drove six blocks.

Then stopped for twenty-three minutes beneath a highway overpass.

Moreno obtained nearby security footage from a gas station.

The image was grainy, but clear enough.

A man opened the rear doors.

Another vehicle pulled up beside the van.

A second man got out carrying what looked like a medical cooler.

Grace watched the footage in Dana's office.

"Can you zoom in?"

Moreno did.

The second man's face was partially visible.

Jenna gasped.

"That's him."

"Who?"

"Harold Vane. The hospital administrator."

Moreno froze the frame.

Vane leaned into the van.

When he stepped back, something small and bundled was in his arms.

Emma.

Then the screen went black for three seconds.

When the image returned, Vane was running.

And someone inside the van was pointing a gun at him.
