Chapter 13 - A Dead Man's Voice

Harold Vane had died six hours before the break-in.
The medical examiner found no obvious signs of violence. The motel room was locked from the inside. His wallet and phone were still there.
But someone who looked and sounded enough like him had entered Bright Hope House.
"Costume?" Alexander asked.
"Or coincidence," Moreno said. "We don't build a case on a child's memory of shoes and breathing. But we don't ignore it either."
Lily sat nearby with Miss Anna, offended by the word coincidence.
"I remember people," she said. "I just don't use faces."
Moreno smiled. "That's fair."
Grace squeezed Lily's shoulder.
Back at the Whitmore house, Emma's medical testing continued under security.
Dr. Shah confirmed what she had suspected. Emma's blindness was severe, but the original diagnosis was fraudulent. Surgery could remove the cataracts, though no one could predict how much useful vision Emma's brain would develop.
"She may see light," Dr. Shah said. "She may see shapes. She may eventually see more. Or very little. We need to be honest about every possibility."
Grace looked at Emma sleeping in her arms.
"Do we have to decide now?"
"Soon, but not tonight."
Grace appreciated that answer.
That night, Jenna stayed for dinner.
The situation between the two women had become something strange and fragile. Jenna was Emma's first mother. Grace was the mother feeding her at two in the morning. Neither title erased the other.
After dinner, Jenna sat beside the crib and sang badly.
Emma smiled anyway.
Grace laughed. "She has no standards."
Jenna laughed too, then cried.
It was the first time their grief occupied the same room without fighting for space.
At 9:47 p.m., Detective Moreno called.
"We got access to Vane's phone."
Alexander put her on speaker.
"Anything?"
"A voicemail he never sent. Recorded yesterday."
Moreno played it.
Vane's voice was weak.
"If you're hearing this, I ran out of time. Malcolm Reed ordered the transfer. I changed the route. I thought I could get the baby to safety. Someone followed us. I made a false diagnosis because I needed her medical identity to disappear from Reed's private network. I am sorry. I did what I thought would keep her alive."
Grace closed her eyes.
The terrible lie in Emma's records had also been part of the reason she survived.
Then Vane continued.
"Lucas found out what his father planned. He tried to stop him. Malcolm had him taken to North Ridge Recovery under another name."
Jenna stood so fast her chair fell.
"North Ridge?"
Moreno's voice came back.
"It's a private rehabilitation facility. Reed family money owns forty percent of it."
Jenna looked at Grace, terrified to hope.
"You think Lucas is alive?"
May you like
Moreno answered carefully.
"We are going there now."
