Chapter 13 - The CFO

Nico called Daniel at 8:06 p.m.

He did not accuse him.

"Come to the estate," Nico said. "We found another transfer."

Daniel arrived forty minutes later carrying two laptops and a folder.

Then he walked into Nico's study and saw Detective Park.

"What's going on?"

"Sit down."

"Nico, if this is about the Northline audit, I already gave everything to—"

The hospital paperwork is ready. But Ferrante has to believe the theft was Sienna's idea.

"That isn't me."

"Try again."

"Someone manipulated the audio."

"Your phone connected to the Cole residence tower the night this was recorded."

"That proves nothing."

"Your corporate car entered their neighborhood at 8:42 p.m."

"I was meeting Gavin about project forecasts."

"You stole from me."

"You think I needed your money?"

"People don't steal because they need. They steal because they decide they deserve."

"You were going to sell the company."

"What?"

"You talked to private-equity firms. You planned to cash out and hand the rest to Sienna."

"I explored options."

"After everything Thomas and I built for you?"

"For me? You were paid millions."

"We made you billions."

He claimed Gavin had approached him with a way to "redirect" vendor payments into an investment pool. It was supposed to be temporary. Then losses hit. More money was needed. Raymond created shell companies. Marjorie recruited Elaine for documents.

"And Sienna found the invoices," Park said.

"Yes."

"So you decided to frame her."

"Gavin decided that."

"You helped."

"What was supposed to happen after the baby was born?"

"Nothing."

Park leaned in. "Wrong answer."

"I never agreed to hurt anybody."

Sienna's voice shook. "What was supposed to happen?"

"Gavin said you would sign the documents. Then you'd go to a private recovery center for postpartum exhaustion."

"Against my will?"

"He said you needed help."

"And Mila?"

"Where was my daughter supposed to go?"

"With Gavin."

"Where?"

"Canada. For a while."

Sienna's face went white.

Park asked, "What about the newborn?"

Daniel did not answer.

"What about the baby?" Sienna demanded.
