Chapter 2 - The Blue Box

Nico did not ask what the blue box was.
Not yet.
He caught Sienna as her knees buckled and shouted for the estate medic.
"I'm fine," she insisted, breathless.
"You're not fine."
"It might just be my water."
Gavin pushed past Marcus. "She's my wife. I'm taking her to the hospital."
"You are not touching her."
"You don't get to decide that."
"Actually," Sienna said, barely above a whisper, "I do."
Sienna pressed one hand against the SUV to steady herself.
"I'm going with my father."
For the first time, fear crossed Gavin's face.
"Fine. You're emotional. We'll talk later."
Nico looked toward Marcus. "Lock down the estate. Preserve every camera feed from the last six hours. Call Dr. Patel and tell him we're on the way."
"And them?" Marcus asked.
"They stay in the main sitting room until the police arrive."
Marjorie scoffed. "Police? Over a haircut?"
"Over holding down a three-year-old while she begged you to stop. Over assault. Over whatever made you so afraid of what she might say."
Sabrina folded her arms. "You always hated our family."
"No. I gave your brother a job. I paid for your mother's surgery. I handed Gavin opportunities men twice his age would have killed for."
"My mistake was believing gratitude and character were the same thing."
"Dad."
"No! Don't let Daddy touch Mommy!"
"Baby, it's okay."
"No! Daddy makes the bad face!"
"What blue box were you talking about?"
Mila pointed toward the far side of the garage.
"Daddy put it where the wall has a little door. He said Aunt Bri had to move it before Nonno looked."
"Don't," Gavin said.
"Now I'm definitely opening it."
Gavin shoved past one of the guards.
"You need a warrant."
"For my wall?"
"Not that door."
"The tiny one behind the tire."
Sabrina whispered, "Oh, God."
Marcus removed two screws and pulled the panel open.
A blue steel cash box sat inside.
On top of it was a disposable phone.
The screen lit up.
