Chapter 15 - Nico's Old Sin

"Tell me," Sienna said.

Nico closed the study door.

Park remained inside.

So did Thomas.

"It's real."

"Dad."

"But not for the reason Gavin wants you to believe."

Twenty years earlier, a city inspector named Paul DeLuca had discovered a serious concrete defect on one of Ferrante's early apartment projects.

Nico had ordered the building closed and repairs started.

"Why were you giving him money?" Park asked.

"Because his wife had leukemia and he was drowning in bills."

"That sounds convenient."

"It was stupid," Nico said. "It was also true. I paid thirty thousand dollars of his medical debt. In cash, because Paul was ashamed and didn't want anyone to know."

"Did he change an inspection because of it?"

"No. He failed us twice after that. The records will show it."

"Then Gavin wasn't holding proof. He was holding something that looked dirty enough to create panic."

"He collected everybody's weaknesses."

Thomas looked grim. "That's how he controlled people."

"No. That's how he thought people worked."

"You need to know something. If anything else from my past comes out, you don't protect me. You protect yourself and your children."

"I spent months hiding things because I thought protecting family meant keeping the ugly parts private."

"I taught you that."

"Maybe."

"Then I was wrong."

He admitted setting up shell companies and using Sienna's stolen identity.

He admitted entering the estate under a false contractor pass.

He admitted delivering the copied hardware token.

"Gavin," Park said. "Say it."

"Gavin wasn't the one who started it."

"Who did?"

"Marjorie."

Raymond explained that Marjorie had spent years resenting the Ferrantes. She believed Sienna had "stolen" Gavin from his family and that Nico treated them like charity cases.

"And the baby?" Park asked.

"Marjorie said once the boy was born, Gavin would have what he needed."

Sienna's hand moved protectively over her stomach.

"What does that mean?"

Raymond whispered, "A Ferrante heir."

"Gavin is the father."

"Biologically," Raymond said. "But Marjorie thought the Ferrante name was worth more than the Cole name. She wanted the children, the trust, and the company connection."

"She didn't want me."

"No," Raymond said. "She wanted everything that came through you."

Park received a message and stood.

"We have a problem."

"What?"

"Gavin's surveillance team lost him twenty minutes ago."

May you like

Sienna's face drained.

Then the lights in Nico's estate went out.
