Chapter 20 - What Mila Remembered

Gavin pleaded guilty to kidnapping, conspiracy, major fraud, identity theft, forgery, and assault.

He did not do it because he was sorry.

He did it because the evidence had become impossible to outrun.

The voice recorder Mila had hidden in her stuffed rabbit was the center of the case.

So were the garage video, Elaine's false hospital credentials, Raymond's shell accounts, Sabrina's testimony, Daniel's financial records, and Marjorie's secret recordings.

In the end, every piece of it pointed back at him.

Marjorie received a separate sentence for conspiracy, fraud, child endangerment, and her role in the medical scheme.

"Including you?" Sienna asked when he showed her the new rules.

"Especially me."

She returned to work six months later, part-time at first.

It looked like sleeping through the night without checking the locks three times.

It looked like Mila laughing when her hair stood up after a bath.

On Mila's fourth birthday, Sienna sat her on the bathroom counter with a brush.

"Want me to braid the front?" Sienna asked.

"Will it get long again?"

"If you want it to."

"And nobody can cut it?"

"Nobody gets to touch your body without permission unless it's to keep you safe. Not Grandma. Not Aunt Bri. Not me. You understand?"

"I want two little braids."

Downstairs, Nico was holding Leo while pretending not to be terrified the baby might spit up on his suit.

"Nonno! Look!"

"Beautiful."

"They're not long yet."

"They don't have to be."

For a minute, she watched her baby brother sleep.

Then she said, "Do you remember the blue box?"

"Yes," Nico said carefully. "I remember."

"I knew Daddy hid it because he said little kids don't remember things."

"But you did."

"I remembered Mommy crying. I remembered the red-nail lady. I remembered Grandma saying not to tell."

"You don't have to remember all of it forever, baby."

"I know."

"I'm going to remember him instead."

Nico looked down at the children beside him and understood something he wished he had learned earlier.

And because one frightened little girl refused to let the truth disappear, her mother walked free, her brother was born safe, and a family built on secrets finally learned how to live without them.

"Two braids," he said. "That's serious business."

Mila giggled.

Sienna laughed.

Leo woke and began to fuss.

And for the first time in a very long time, the noise in Nico Ferrante's house did not sound like danger.

It sounded like home.
