Chapter 12 - The LanternNadia sent officers to the teacher's home. She was alive, shaken, and unwilling to speak further until protected. She had ended the call when someone began pounding on her door.

The Lantern was a derelict roadside motel with a flickering neon sign and fresh tire tracks behind the boarded-up reception area. Nadia obtained a warrant based on the records and witness accounts. Daniel waited beyond the police line, Emma beside him.

“People keep telling me to go home,” he said.

“Because they want you to keep a clear head for Leo.”

“I don't know how.”

“Then just stand here. That's enough for tonight.”

An officer emerged carrying a folded blue cardigan. Daniel recognized the little embroidered moon near the cuff. Claire had stitched it herself.

“She was here,” he whispered.

Emma never asked Daniel to be fearless. She knew people were tired of being told to be strong when they were already doing the hardest thing they knew how to do. She asked whether he'd eaten, whether he'd called Leo, and whether he could stand another cup of bad coffee.

Inside, detectives found a notebook of dates, half of them crossed out. In the margins were children's names and payment figures. A second notebook belonged to a former staff member and described medication irregularities.

Under a loose floorboard sat an old phone. Its last unsent message was addressed to Daniel:

If this reaches you, tell Leo his mother did not leave him.

Daniel read it twice before the words became real. Emma gripped the edge of a chair to steady herself.

Nadia entered with another discovery. “We found recent food wrappers, two beds, and evidence someone left in a hurry. But there's more.”

She showed Daniel a security still: Claire stepping out of a side exit under her own power, helping a younger woman walk.

The timestamp was from that afternoon.

Claire wasn't merely being moved anymore.
