Chapter 14 - Locker 317The old library's night custodian recognized Emma and let the officers into the unused coat-check room. Locker 317 stood behind a stack of folding chairs. Nadia opened it with the key while Daniel and Emma kept their distance.

Inside were medical charts, bank-transfer copies, witness statements, and a pocket recorder. Claire had built an entire case in secret.
A note on top read: Daniel, I wanted to come home. They threatened Leo. I am sorry I couldn't tell you. Do not trust a private meeting with anyone from the foundation. Tell our boy I kept my promise.
Daniel read it aloud once, voice breaking on the last sentence.
Nadia collected the documents. “This is enough for warrants against several people. But we still need to find Claire.”
A voice came from the end of the corridor. “Then you should ask me.”
Vivian stood there with no makeup and a bandage on her hand. She had slipped past the custodial entrance, carrying her own folder.
“I don't have much time,” she said. “Vale is preparing to leave the country. He's moving the remaining patients tonight.”
There was no dramatic soundtrack in the operations van, only the hum of the ventilation fan and radios speaking in clipped fragments. Daniel discovered that hope was not a comfortable feeling. It was a terrible, vulnerable thing, something he had almost trained himself not to allow.
“Why should we believe you?” Emma asked.
“Because my daughter is among them.”
Daniel stared at her. “You told me Claire escaped.”
“She did. He caught her.” Vivian swallowed. “And he called me to make sure I understood what would happen if I went to the police.”
Nadia demanded an address. Vivian hesitated only a moment before handing over a map marked with an industrial warehouse on the river.
Then her phone lit up with a video message. Claire stood in a windowless room, visibly exhausted but alive.
A man's voice behind the camera said, “Mrs. Hale, you have ten minutes to call off your friends.”
The recording ended as Claire turned and whispered one word:
May you like
“Daniel.”
