Chapter 9 - The Brother Who LiedEmma found Ben in his college apartment, packing a suitcase with shaking hands.

“You told me they let you go,” she said.
“They did. Eventually.”
“Ben, what did they make you do?”
He sank onto the mattress. “Deliver messages. Copy documents. Once they made me drive a woman from Saint Agnes to that recovery place.”
“What woman?”
“I never saw her face. She had a blanket over her head. She was crying and saying her son needed her.”
Emma sat beside him. “Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because they said they'd take you next.”
Daniel arrived with Owen as Ben retrieved a flash drive taped beneath a drawer. “I kept copies,” he said. “I thought if they ever came back...”
Ben looked younger than his age while he explained what had happened. Emma remembered walking him to elementary school in rain boots too large for his feet. She did not interrupt or finish his sentences. Whatever he'd been made to carry, he deserved to set it down in his own words.
On the drive were facility schedules, payment records, and a short audio recording. A woman spoke through muffled sobs: “I won't sign. You can't use my son to make me sign.”
Daniel knew Claire's voice. His fingers went numb.
Another voice answered, calm and familiar. “You're making this hard for everyone, darling.”
Vivian.
Ben admitted he'd signed paperwork under duress. Nadia arranged protective placement for him and collected the drive through a documented evidence handoff.
Daniel stood outside with Emma as rain began to fall. “My son has been living under the same roof as her.”
“You can change that now,” Emma said. “You already have.”
His phone vibrated with a new message from Vivian: MEET ME ALONE IF YOU WANT THE TRUTH ABOUT CLAIRE.
Attached was a live photo of a woman's hand holding a small silver locket against a barred window.

On the wrist was Claire's unmistakable crescent-shaped birthmark.
