Chapter 17 - The Nursery CameraDaniel called the house immediately. Leo's night nurse, Patricia, answered from the upstairs hallway. “He's safe,” she said. “I'm with him. But the alarm keeps saying there's an authorized visitor at the service entrance.”

“Take him to the secure room,” Daniel instructed. “Don't confront anyone.”

Police cars were already on the way. Nadia confirmed that the nursery camera showed a maintenance worker, not Owen, but the worker had received an electronic access code issued moments earlier.

Daniel listened as Patricia guided Leo into the safe room. “Daddy?” Leo asked over the speaker. “Is Mommy coming?”

Daniel looked through the hospital window at Claire, asleep under careful supervision.

“Yes, buddy,” he said, his voice trembling. “Mommy's coming home.”

By the time officers arrived, the worker had left a bag beside the back gate and driven away. The bag contained a burner phone and forged travel documents in Owen's name. Whether Owen planted them or someone was framing him remained unclear.

Nadia traced the access code to a foundation administrator, who agreed to cooperate. He provided records showing Owen had been taking payments from Vale for years. A warrant went out for Owen's arrest.

The reunion was quieter than any scene Daniel had rehearsed in his head. Nobody rushed the boy, demanded an embrace, or told Claire how she ought to feel. They let the seconds pass naturally. For once the adults in Leo's life took their lead from him.

Emma sat outside Claire's hospital room and stared at her own hands. “I should have gone to the police earlier.”

“You were protecting Ben,” Daniel said.

“I still wonder what it cost Claire.”

Daniel sat beside her. “We can spend the next year counting everything we should have done. Or we can help her with what comes next.”

A doctor joined them with news. Claire was stable, but her recovery would take time, and some memories remained fragmented. Leo's reunion needed to be slow, safe, and guided by clinicians.

Then Nadia's phone buzzed. Officers had located Owen at a private airfield. He had boarded a small plane, and the pilot was preparing for departure.

What Nadia said next silenced everyone:
