Chapter 18 - A Name on the Manifest“Leo is at home,” Daniel said. “I just spoke to him.”

“Then Owen is using his identity to move someone else,” Nadia replied.
The airfield crew delayed departure while federal agents checked the plane. They found no child aboard. They did find a sealed case of copied medical files and a passport bearing Leo's name with a different photograph.
Owen was taken into custody at the gate. He demanded a lawyer and refused to explain why he had planned to use a child's identity.
Vivian, too, was arrested after the financial records and Claire's testimony established her role. She asked to see Leo before being taken away. Daniel refused.
“He deserves the truth someday,” he told her. “But he doesn't deserve another threat today.”
Claire spent several days recovering in the hospital before a child therapist helped plan a visit. Daniel rehearsed no speeches. Emma offered to wait outside, but Claire took her hand.
“You helped him when I couldn't,” Claire said. “Please stay close.”
Leo came into the room clutching his rabbit. He looked at the woman in the bed, then back at Daniel.
When reports about the rescued children appeared, Daniel refused requests to reveal their names. He understood that being saved should not mean losing your privacy. The foundation paid for independent advocates, and Claire insisted that families—not donors—be consulted about what care they needed.
“Mommy?”
Claire smiled through tears. “Hi, my beautiful boy.”
He crossed the room slowly. Claire lowered her arms, letting him decide. When he leaned against her, she held him gently and cried into his hair.
Daniel stepped into the hall to give them a moment. Emma joined him, her eyes wet.
“Thank you,” he said.
“For the milk?”
“For seeing him when everybody else saw a problem to manage.”
The hospital doors opened and Nadia approached. “Owen wants to make a statement,” she said. “He's offering a location for another hidden facility.”
“Another one?” Daniel asked.
May you like
Nadia nodded grimly. “He says there are still children there.”
