Chapter 6 - The Woman Behind the FoundationVivian listened to the accusation without blinking. “A holding company isn't evidence of a crime.”

“Then why didn't you tell me Claire was treated there?” Daniel asked.

“She wasn't.”

“The photograph says otherwise.”

“Photographs can be manipulated.”

Daniel instructed Owen to revoke Vivian's foundation access and preserve every login record. Vivian laughed once, coldly. “You think your money makes you smart. Claire thought the same.”

“Where is she?”

For the first time, something raw moved behind Vivian's expression. “You don't understand what she discovered.”

“Then help me understand.”

But she walked out.

Emma met Daniel and Owen at a diner across town. Owen laid out a timeline of unauthorized transfers and fake invoices. Emma recognized three staff signatures, including Dr. Marcus Vale, Saint Agnes's medical director.

Emma folded her hands beneath the diner table. She had spent months calculating what she could risk: another shift, another job, another unanswered call. It exhausted her to know that bravery was sometimes only the decision to tell one more true sentence to somebody willing to hear it.

“He gave orders nobody could question,” she said. “And when parents complained, he told them their children were unstable.”

Daniel showed her the photograph of his son hiding beneath the desk. “Leo is scared of Vivian. How did I miss that?”

“You were looking for your wife,” Emma said. “And grief makes the rest of the room hard to see.”

Daniel watched her push her coffee away, untouched. “You knew Claire better than I realized.”

“She made terrible jokes. She sang off-key. She once drove three hours because I said I was lonely.” Emma blinked fast. “She wasn't the kind of person who would leave her child.”

Daniel had waited eleven months for someone to say those words without pity.

Owen's investigator called. A security guard at the recovery center had agreed to talk. They met him near a bus depot. The guard handed over a keycard and a handwritten list of night-shift dates.

“There's one patient you should ask for,” he said. “She's listed as Jane W.”

“Who is she?” Daniel asked.

The guard looked at Leo's photograph on Daniel's phone.
