Chapter 16 - The Friend at the Gate“No,” Daniel said automatically. Owen had handled his security for fifteen years. Owen had helped carry Leo out of the hospital on the day he was born.

Then Daniel remembered the photos, the convenient discoveries, the places Owen always seemed to reach first.

Nadia showed him a transfer log from the warehouse. One vehicle pass bore Owen's security credentials. “We haven't determined whether they were stolen,” she said. “But we need to speak to him.”

Owen's phone went straight to voicemail.

At the hospital Claire lay in a quiet room with a blanket pulled to her shoulders. Daniel stopped in the doorway. Her hair was shorter. Her face was thinner. But her eyes were the eyes he remembered.

“Dan,” she whispered.

He crossed the room in three steps. “I'm here.”

For a while, neither spoke. He held her hand gently, afraid of hurting her, and she cried without trying to hide it.

“I tried to call,” she said. “Every time I got close, they moved me.”

Leo's favorite blanket had a faded corner he rubbed between his fingers when he was frightened. Daniel had once worried about taking that habit away. Now he left the blanket where Leo could reach it. Small comforts, he'd learned, were not problems adults needed to fix.

“I should have found you.”

“You kept Leo safe. That's what mattered.”

He couldn't bring himself to mention how close he'd come to failing at that too.

Claire looked past his shoulder and saw Emma. Her face changed. “Emmy.”

Emma covered her mouth. Claire opened her arms and they embraced, the years between them collapsing into a few broken words.

Then Claire pulled back. “Listen. Owen wasn't just passing information. He arranged the payments. He knew the patients were being held.”

“Why?” Daniel asked.

“He said Vivian promised him control of the foundation if I was declared unfit. But he made his own deal with Vale.”

Nadia entered carrying her phone. Owen had just accessed Daniel's home security system from a remote location.
