Chapter 19 - The Other ChildrenThe second facility was smaller than the first, concealed within a licensed residential program. Investigators approached carefully, using child-protection specialists and medical personnel rather than treating the residents like suspects.

They found seven children whose families had been given misleading accounts of their treatment. Some had been moved without clear consent. Others had lost contact with relatives after repeated administrative delays. The authorities opened a much larger investigation.
Daniel learned the news while building a tower of wooden blocks with Leo beside Claire's hospital bed.
“Did they find the kids?” Claire asked.
“Yes,” Daniel said. “They're getting help.”
Claire closed her eyes. “Then maybe something good can come out of all this.”
Daniel expected the old family records to make him angry. Instead they made him curious about all the lives that had unfolded beyond his knowledge. Emma did not owe the Mercers affection because of a family tree. Their friendship had already been built one honest choice at a time.
The weeks that followed weren't a montage of miracles. There were nightmares, difficult appointments, cancelled plans, and days when Leo refused to let Daniel out of sight. Claire sometimes startled at the sound of a closing door. Emma continued working in another restaurant after her former employer apologized and offered her back wages; she chose not to return.
Ben enrolled in classes again. He told Emma he'd spend the rest of his life proving he was more than the worst decision he had been forced to make. She told him he had nothing to prove to her.
When formal charges were filed against Vale, Owen, Vivian, and several others, the family watched the announcement together. Daniel kept the television volume low and turned it off when Leo asked for a story.
One evening Claire handed Daniel a sealed envelope. “I wrote this in case I didn't get home,” she said. “It isn't about the case.”
He opened it after Leo went to bed. Inside were two pages addressed to him and a final note for Emma.
Halfway through the letter, Daniel stopped breathing.

Claire had written that before she disappeared, she had discovered a secret about Daniel's own family—one she was afraid would destroy his trust forever.
