Chapter 4 - The Locked CabinetDaniel found Claire's old office unlocked but strangely neat. Vivian had insisted on organizing it after the police investigation, and the empty shelves now felt deliberate.

Owen arrived with a file. “Saint Agnes billed the foundation for child therapy services after the building closed. Millions. The approvals came from inside the Mercer offices.”
“My signature?”
“Electronic authorization. We need to know who had access.”
Daniel had handed Vivian temporary control of the foundation during the search for Claire. He felt suddenly sick.
Emma called from a number he didn't recognize. “Someone was outside my apartment,” she said. “He left a picture of Ben on my windshield.”
“Come to the house.”
“No. Your house is the last place I trust.”
“Then tell me where to meet.”
They chose a public library. Emma arrived holding a grocery bag, its contents wrapped in a faded dish towel. Inside lay a small blue wooden box with a brass latch.
“Claire gave me this three days before she disappeared,” Emma said. “She said to keep it away from her mother.”
The library smelled of old paper and floor polish. Claire had once teased Daniel for making donations to buildings he never visited. Now he stood surrounded by strangers who had come there for ordinary reasons, and he envied their ordinary days more than he could explain.
Daniel stared. “You knew Claire?”
“We grew up together. We lost touch after college. She found me at Saint Agnes when she started asking questions. I wanted to tell you, but she begged me not to. She didn't know who was involved.”
“Why hide it all this time?”
“Because the day after she vanished, a man took Ben off the street and told me I would see him again only if I kept quiet.”
“Was he hurt?”
“He came home. He won't talk about it.”
Inside the box was a key, a child's photograph, and a folded page torn from a hospital register. A line was circled in red: ROOM B-12 / TRANSFER WITHOUT CONSENT.
Daniel recognized the photograph. Claire was standing beside Emma and an infant Leo. All three were smiling beneath a painted blue door.
Emma shook her head. “We never took that picture.”
Daniel turned it over. A date had been printed on the back.
