Chapter 1 - What Caleb Saw

Caleb Whitcomb heard his baby scream before he reached the nursery.

Nora Hale, the nanny he had trusted for eight months, was on the rug with one hand braced across eight-month-old Sophie's chest and the other gripping her wrist.

A red mark spread along the baby's side.

"Get your hands off her."

"Caleb, wait--"

He crossed the room and pulled Sophie into his arms.

"What did you do?"

"She was reacting to something. I was trying to keep her from scratching until--"

"Don't."

Sophie buried her wet face against his shirt.

"You need to listen to me."

"My daughter is screaming and you were holding her down."

"The mark appeared after I changed her clothes. I called Dr. Levin."

No message from the pediatrician.

Nora stared at the screen.

"That's not possible."

"Pack your things."

"Caleb."

"You're done."

For a second she looked furious.

She walked to the dresser, opened the bottom drawer, and removed a small black USB drive.

"If you're firing me, fine. But take this."

"What is it?"

"Copies."

"Of what?"

"Schedules. Messages. Nursery logs. Instructions that changed after I signed them."

"You're trying to blame paperwork?"

"I'm telling you someone has been changing what I'm told to do."

Caleb pointed toward the door.

"Leave."

Nora placed the USB on the changing table.

"You were supposed to be in Atlanta until tomorrow night."

"My meeting was canceled."

"No. It was moved."

"How would you know?"

"Because yesterday your driver's schedule showed airport pickup tomorrow."

"And the emergency text that brought you home today? The one saying Sophie had a fever?"

He had received it at 2:06.

SOPHIE FEVER 103. COME HOME NOW.

By the time he arrived, Sophie had no fever.

"Someone wanted you in this room at exactly 3:18."

At the doorway, she stopped.

"Open the last screenshot first."

Caleb waited until the front door closed.

He set Sophie in her crib and plugged the USB into his laptop.

The last screenshot showed a message thread.

Move his Atlanta meeting.

Delay Carter thirty minutes.

Send fever alert at 2:06.

Make sure nursery protocol switches at 3:00.

The contact who sent the instructions was saved under one letter.

M.

Caleb knew exactly one person in his family everyone called that.

May you like

His father.

Malcolm Whitcomb.
