Chapter 4 - The Dead Wife's Shares

Sophie's mother, Julia Whitcomb, had died eighteen months earlier after a single-car crash outside Belle Meade.

Caleb had spent a year functioning like a machine.

He had never examined the structure Julia left behind.

At 9:40 p.m., Caleb sat in his private office with family attorney Nathan Reed.

Nathan read the trust twice.

"Julia left Sophie twenty-two percent of Whitcomb Medical."

"I know."

"You know the number. I'm not sure you know the control."

"Those shares sit in an independent maternal trust until Sophie turns twenty-five. You are natural guardian, but you cannot vote them."

"Who can?"

"Three trustees."

"Which means my father can't."

"Correct."

"Unless he becomes Sophie's court-appointed guardian?"

"Guardianship alone should not give him the votes."

"Should?"

"There's an incapacity clause."

Caleb's stomach tightened.

"If Sophie's surviving parent is judicially declared unable to protect her financial interests, the trust can appoint a temporary family representative."

"Who?"

"Malcolm Whitcomb."

"Julia agreed to that?"

"The trust was amended six weeks before her death."

"By Julia?"

"The signature says yes."

Julia had disliked Malcolm.

She respected him professionally.

She never trusted him personally.

"She wouldn't do this."

Nathan's expression changed.

"You think the signature is false?"

"I think my wife once told me she would rather burn her shares than let my father vote them."

"That's specific."

"It was during a fight."

"About what?"

Malcolm had pushed for a merger with Armitage Health.

Julia called it a disguised takeover.

She had threatened to block it with her trust vote.

Two months later she died.

Caleb had never connected those facts.

Grief had turned chronology into fog.

Nathan said, "We need the original amendment."

"Where?"

"Whitcomb family office."

A message from his father.

He knew before opening it.

HOW IS SOPHIE?

Malcolm replied immediately.

I HEARD THERE WAS AN INCIDENT WITH THE NANNY.

He had told no one outside the house.

Nathan said, "Do not confront him yet."

Caleb looked at the nursery camera outage.

"He already knows I found something."

He answered, listened, and looked at Caleb.

"What?"

"The maternal trust office just received a notice."

"What notice?"

"Your father filed for an emergency board meeting tomorrow."

May you like

"About what?"

"Your capacity to continue as CEO."
