Chapter 11 - The Man in the Cabin

Owen Price lived under the name Owen Parks outside Cookeville.
Police found him in a cabin with three dogs and a shotgun he never raised.
When Detective Ortiz showed her badge, he said:
"Took you long enough."
Caleb watched the interview through glass.
Owen looked older than fifty.
"Did you disable the steering?" Ortiz asked.
"No."
"Did Derek Kane?"
"I don't know."
"Your passenger died."
Owen rubbed both hands over his face.
"The steering locked. I fought it. We hit the barrier."
"Was Julia alive?"
"Yes."
"What happened next?"
"A black Escalade arrived."
"Who was inside?"
"Malcolm Whitcomb and Derek Kane."
"Julia was bleeding, but she was awake. She kept saying, ‘Call Caleb.'"
Caleb pressed a fist against his mouth.
"What did Malcolm do?"
"He took her phone."
"And then?"
"He told Derek to check the car."
"Did he hurt Julia?"
Owen looked directly at the camera.
"No."
"But he stopped me from calling 911."
"For how long?"
"Seven minutes. Maybe eight."
"Why?"
"He said company medics were coming."
"They weren't?"
"No."
"Who called 911?"
"I did, after Malcolm left."
Julia had bled for those missing minutes.
Not murder by a single strike.
Ortiz asked why Owen changed his statement.
"Malcolm said the crash would be blamed on me. He paid my mother's mortgage and gave me cash to disappear."
"Why come forward now?"
"I didn't."
"You were found."
"Then maybe I'm still a coward."
His statement linked Malcolm to the scene.
But the diagnostic command still pointed to Derek.
Back at the hospital, Nora was discharged.
She refused Caleb's offer to return to the estate.
"Not while your father's people still run security."
"I fired the company."
"You replaced them in twelve hours?"
"No."
"Then Sophie goes somewhere else."
Nathan arranged a secure rental house under a trust-owned LLC.
Caleb carried Sophie inside himself.
That night, for the first time, he prepared every bottle.
At 2:13 a.m., Sophie woke crying.
A voice message from Derek.
"Caleb, your father didn't order the steering command."
May you like
"I did."
"But Julia was never supposed to die."
