Chapter 10 - The Other Man

Nora had a cut above her eyebrow and bruises along one arm.

Caleb stopped outside the hospital room.

He did not enter until she said yes.

When he did, the first thing he said was:

"I'm sorry."

"For which part?"

"All of it."

"That's a long list."

"I know."

Her anger softened by one degree.

"Who took you?"

"Derek."

Derek smashed the window, dragged her into another car, and demanded the USB.

"I told him you had it."

"What did he do?"

"Panicked."

"Then?"

"He kept saying, ‘This was supposed to stay civil.'"

"He kidnapped you."

"He also kept saying Malcolm had gone too far."

"That's not innocence."

"I know."

Derek drove toward an industrial property.

At a red light, Nora kicked open the rear door and ran into traffic.

A delivery driver helped her.

"Did Derek say where he was taking you?"

"No."

"Anything else?"

"He said your father was cleaning old problems before the merger."

"I knew your wife."

"You should have told me."

"She told me not to trust anyone with your last name."

That hurt because it made sense.

"She trusted you with Sophie."

"She trusted me to watch."

"And you did."

Nora turned her face away.

"I watched too long."

Caleb knew what she meant.

Like everyone else, Nora had needed proof before acting.

He said, "You saved copies."

"That may be the only reason we know any of this."

"We found Derek's car."

"Where?"

"Whitcomb Medical's old distribution center."

"You are not going there."

"My friend is involved."

"Your friend kidnapped a witness."

"He knows my father's systems."

"Which is why trained officers are handling it."

Caleb hated being told to wait.

His entire life, waiting had been something other people did for Whitcombs.

Two hours later, SWAT entered the distribution center.

But in a locked office they found printed guardianship drafts.

And a shred bin filled with vehicle logs.

Technicians reconstructed one page.

A diagnostic command sent fourteen seconds before Julia's crash.

REMOTE STEERING ASSIST: DISABLE.

DKANE.

Caleb stared at the printout.

His oldest friend had not just covered up Julia's death.

His login had touched the car.
