Chapter 13 - The Vote

Malcolm opened the merger meeting at noon.

He had no idea federal agents were already in the building.

Men like Malcolm spent their lives assuming information reached them first.

Caleb entered the boardroom carrying no laptop.

"You shouldn't be here."

"I'm still CEO."

"Temporarily."

The directors looked uneasy.

"Given recent instability, I move that the board appoint an interim chief executive through merger completion."

Then control Sophie's trust vote.

Caleb said, "Before any vote, counsel has a disclosure."

Federal investigators followed.

Malcolm's face changed for the first time.

"What is this?"

Nathan placed copies of the SOVEREIGN memos on the table.

"Evidence of undisclosed manipulation of executive schedules, household records, trust-related litigation planning, and interference with a prior police investigation."

"You have no idea what you're doing."

"That line used to work."

"You are destroying this company."

"No. I'm refusing to let you use my daughter to control it."

Malcolm pushed back his chair.

"Everything I did was to protect Whitcomb."

"From whom?"

"People who don't understand what it took to build."

"Julia understood."

His father's face hardened.

"Julia was reckless."

"She was dying in a wrecked car and you delayed 911 because you wanted documents."

A director whispered, "My God."

Malcolm looked toward the investigators.

"You think Derek's story saves him?"

"No."

"You think Nora is innocent?"

"Yes."

"You think that nanny stumbled onto this?"

"She was placed in your house."

"By whom?"

"Ask Julia's trustee."

Nathan's expression changed.

"What does that mean?"

"Your wife planned for Nora to enter Sophie's life before she died."

Caleb felt the room shift.

"That doesn't change what you did."

"No. But it changes who has been manipulating you."

Agents approached Malcolm.

"I will cooperate."

Then he looked at Caleb with something almost like pity.

"Before you make Nora a saint, ask what Julia paid her to hide."

Caleb's stomach tightened.

The merger vote collapsed.

Markets reacted within minutes.

"What did Julia pay you to hide?"

"I was hoping Malcolm never found that."
