He Fired the Nanny for “Hurting” His Baby—Then a USB Proved Someone Had Staged the Entire Scene

Nora came to the rental house that evening.

She sat at the kitchen table with both hands around untouched coffee.

"Julia paid my nursing-school debt," she said.

"For what?"

"Not to hide a crime."

"That wasn't my question."

Nora looked at Sophie sleeping in a portable crib.

"Julia knew she was pregnant before she told you."

"She told me at eight weeks."

"She knew at five."

"So?"

"She had already found the trust fraud."

"She was afraid Malcolm would see the pregnancy as another control point."

That sounded exactly like him.

"What did she ask you to do?"

"If anything happened to her, watch Sophie from a distance. If your household became controlled by Malcolm, apply for a childcare position when the time was right."

"You were planted."

"Yes."

"By my wife."

"Yes."

"And you never told me."

"No."

"You entered my home under false pretenses."

"I entered with real references and real qualifications."

"You let me believe I chose you."

"You did choose me."

"From a list Julia's trustee made sure included you."

"This entire time, everyone has been steering me."

"I know."

"No, you don't."

"I should have told you earlier."

"Why didn't you?"

"Because Julia made me promise."

"She's dead."

"And you were drowning."

"You barely slept. You missed meals. You signed whatever the family office placed in front of you. Malcolm chose your staff. Derek ran your calendar. Helen ran your house."

"So you decided I couldn't handle the truth."

"I decided Sophie needed one person in the house Malcolm hadn't chosen."

Caleb wanted to hate that answer.

"Did Julia know about the steering plan?"

"No."

"Did she think Malcolm would kill her?"

"She thought he would ruin her, discredit her, take control of the company."

"She underestimated him."

"What else did Julia leave?"

"One instruction."

"What?"

"If Malcolm ever tried to remove you as Sophie's guardian, I was supposed to give you this."
