Chapter 18 - Julia's Message

Caleb watched Julia's video alone first.

Julia sat at a desk in the old lab, tired and alive.

"Caleb, you love people by trusting them quickly. Your father loves people by managing them. I used to think your way was better."

"Now I think both can be dangerous."

"I discovered Malcolm's Armitage structure. I also discovered that when I challenged him, he began documenting me. Mood. Sleep. Missed dinners. Arguments."

The same playbook later used on Caleb.

The same idea later used on Sophie.

"If I sound unstable, ask who benefits from the label."

"I have arranged for someone outside the family to watch over Sophie if I cannot."

"Nora, if you ever see this, I'm sorry for giving you a job nobody should have."

Then Julia looked directly into the camera.

"Caleb, if I die, your father may not have killed me. I need you to understand that. Malcolm's worst habit is not violence."

"It is believing outcomes excuse methods."

Caleb felt those words settle.

"He will tell himself delay is not murder. Pressure is not coercion. A staged scene is not a lie if the facts around it can be made technically true."

Caleb seeing exactly what was placed in front of him.

"Do not beat him by becoming him."

For a long time neither Caleb nor Nora spoke.

Then Nora said, "She knew you."

"Better than I knew myself."

The criminal cases moved quickly after Derek's final confession.

Malcolm was charged with conspiracy, obstruction, securities fraud, coercion, and offenses tied to delaying emergency aid after Julia's crash.

Margaret negotiated a plea for her role in the guardianship scheme.

Helen cooperated and avoided prison but lost her professional license.

The board canceled the Armitage deal.

Caleb's temporary resignation became permanent.

He no longer wanted to run a company that had confused family loyalty with governance.

Reporters called him weak.

He turned off the television.

One morning she took three steps toward Nora.

"You sure?"

He understood the question.

May you like

"No," he said.

"But I'm willing to learn."
