Chapter 5 - The Board Meeting

At 8:00 the next morning, Malcolm Whitcomb walked into the executive boardroom as though he owned it.
For thirty-five years, he practically had.
That was his most dangerous face.
"Before we begin, I want to say this is painful."
"My son has suffered an unimaginable loss."
"He has also missed twenty-seven percent of executive sessions this quarter."
Caleb said, "Because I have an infant."
"And because your household appears unstable."
"I heard there was an incident yesterday."
"From whom?"
"This is not the place."
"You brought it here."
The chairman cleared his throat.
"Caleb."
"No. He wants my fitness discussed? Let's discuss his sources."
"Your nanny was dismissed for rough handling."
"She was framed."
Malcolm's eyebrows lifted.
"By whom?"
Nathan Reed had made him promise not to.
"Someone altered household instructions and my travel schedule."
Malcolm shook his head sadly.
"This is exactly what concerns me. You are under severe emotional pressure."
"My daughter wore clothing yesterday that caused a skin reaction because someone changed the nursery protocol. The nursery camera went offline. A fake medical alert brought me home at the exact moment my nanny was restraining Sophie under a pediatrician's instructions."
One director sat straighter.
"That sounds like a security failure."
"It sounds like a setup."
"Caleb."
"You filed this meeting twelve hours after it happened."
"I filed because three directors called me."
"Which three?"
Malcolm's face hardened for half a second.
"We're family."
"No. We're in a boardroom. Answer."
"We are not conducting an investigation here."
"Good," Caleb said. "Then don't conduct a competency trial either."
"I am commissioning an independent forensic audit of every Whitcomb family-office login touching my estate, calendar, medical communications, and trust records."
Malcolm said, "You don't have authority to audit the family office."
"I have authority over any system accessing my home."
"Think carefully."
"I finally am."
In the elevator, his phone rang.
"I found Helen."
"Where?"
"She called me."
"What did she say?"
"She wants immunity."
"For what?"
"Changing the schedules."
Caleb stopped the elevator with one hand against the wall.
"Why?"
May you like
"Because she says your father paid her."
"And she says the nursery was only phase one."
