Chapter 11 - The Embryo File

The truth was buried in paperwork nobody expected a grieving widower to reread.
Noah was biologically mine and Laura’s.
That part never changed.
But one year after Laura’s death, Vanessa had contacted St. Anne’s using a forged authorization and asked about the frozen embryos.
The clinic refused transfer.
She tried again under my name.
Still refused.
Then something stranger happened.
One embryo record was marked “administrative discrepancy.”
No transfer.
No destruction.
Just missing.
Rachel said, “We need the clinic’s full audit.”
I felt sick. “Are you saying somebody stole an embryo?”
“I’m saying the records don’t make sense.”
Police found Vanessa’s boat tied to a public dock three miles away. A rideshare camera caught her getting into a black sedan.
The plate belonged to a man named Adrian Vale.
I knew the name.
He had been Laura’s estate accountant.
And he had disappeared from our lives shortly after her death.
Marcus pulled archived visitor records.
Adrian had entered my property five times in the last six months.
Always when I was traveling.
Always authorized by Vanessa.
Emma listened from the hallway until I noticed her.
“You should be with Rachel,” I said gently.
“I’m tired of people talking where I can’t hear.”
That stopped me.
She was right.
I knelt beside her.
“We think Vanessa has been lying about money and about Mommy’s files. Police are looking for her. You are not in trouble. None of this is because of you.”
Emma nodded, but she didn’t look relieved.
“Did she hurt Mommy?” she asked.
The question cut through me.
“No. Your mom died because she was sick.”
“Vanessa said Mommy died because she wouldn’t listen.”
My chest tightened.
“When did she say that?”
“Lots.”
I closed my eyes for one second.
Then the front gate alarm sounded.
A black sedan had stopped outside.
Adrian Vale stepped out with both hands raised.
Police surrounded him before he reached the door.
He shouted one sentence toward the house.
“Daniel! Vanessa didn’t start this!”
I stepped onto the porch.
“What does that mean?”
May you like
Adrian looked directly at me.
“It means Laura knew someone was inside your family before Vanessa ever met you.”
