Chapter 16 - Graham’s Last Card

Vanessa hit the floor.
I dropped beside her as a second shot shattered a planter.
Police shouted from the tree line.
A figure ran behind the greenhouse.
Tactical officers chased him through the gardens and tackled him near the service road.
It wasn’t Graham.
It was his son, Caleb.
Twenty-six years old. Junior accountant. No criminal record.
And carrying a pistol registered to his father.
The bullet had missed Vanessa by inches.
She sat against a stone wall, shaking.
“Graham sent him,” she whispered.
Maybe he did. Maybe Caleb believed he was protecting his father. Either way, the meeting was over.
Police took Vanessa into custody.
Before they put her in the car, she handed me the flash drive.
“Please listen to Laura before you decide what I am.”
I wanted to throw it into the lake.
Instead, I listened.
Laura’s full recording lasted nineteen minutes.
Her voice was weak but steady.
She explained the stolen money. Graham. Adrian’s fear. Vanessa’s help.
Then she said something I never expected.
“Vanessa thinks she can fix this. She’s brave, but she’s also scared, and scared people can become dangerous when someone gives them a reason.”
I closed my eyes.
Laura had seen the possibility before any of us.
The recording continued.
“If I’m gone and Vanessa is still around Daniel, tell him this: do not confuse love with trust. Love is a feeling. Trust is a pattern.”
I stopped the audio.
Rachel sat beside me.
“That doesn’t excuse Vanessa,” she said.
“I know.”
“It explains the beginning. Not the choices after.”
“I know.”
We opened the original staircase footage.
At 4:12, Vanessa carried Noah into frame.
At 4:13, she laid him on the fourth step.
At 4:14, Emma appeared and froze.
Vanessa grabbed Emma’s wrist.
Then the camera audio captured Emma whispering something.
I turned up the volume.
“You said you were going to make Daddy choose.”
Vanessa replied, “And he will.”
Emma said, “He’ll choose us.”
Vanessa leaned close to her.
“No, sweetheart. Men like your father always choose the person who makes life easier.”
Then Vanessa walked away.
On the recording, Emma sat beside Noah and whispered, “I won’t let her take us.”
I covered my face.
But the footage wasn’t over.
At 4:16, another person entered the foyer.
May you like
A man.
One we had not seen before.
