Chapter 15 - The Greenhouse

The police wanted to cancel the midnight meeting.

I wanted Vanessa found.

We compromised.

I went to the greenhouse wearing a wire while tactical officers covered the property from the woods.

The greenhouse had belonged to my mother. After she died, nobody used it except gardeners. At midnight, moonlight shone through broken panes and silvered the rows of empty benches.

Vanessa stepped from behind a wall of dead vines.

She wore jeans, a dark coat, and no makeup. For the first time since I’d known her, she looked tired.

“Did you bring it?”

I held up the trust copy.

“First tell me how you knew Laura.”

Her expression changed.

“Emma found the photo.”

“Yes.”

Vanessa stared at the floor.

“Laura hired me.”

I almost laughed. “To do what?”

“Investigate Graham.”

The answer hit harder than a denial.

Vanessa had been a compliance analyst before I met her. I knew that. I had just never known where.

“She found the money moving,” Vanessa continued. “She needed someone outside the family. I helped trace shell companies.”

“Then why did you work with Graham?”

“Because Laura died.”

“That’s your excuse?”

“No.” Her eyes filled. “It’s the moment everything went wrong.”

She said Graham discovered the investigation and threatened to frame her for the missing funds. Vanessa panicked. He offered a deal: get close to me, find Laura’s evidence, destroy it, and walk away rich.

Instead, Vanessa stayed.

“Why?” I asked.

She looked at me. “Because I fell in love with you.”

I felt nothing but rage.

“You drugged Emma.”

“I gave her melatonin.”

“You staged Noah on the stairs.”

“I was trying to create a reason for Emma to stay with Judith for a few weeks so I could search the house without her watching me.”

“You used my baby as a prop.”

Her face broke. “I never meant for him to get hurt.”

“That sentence is not a defense.”

She held out a flash drive.

“The original footage is here. So is Laura’s full recording.”

I stepped forward.

A gunshot cracked through the greenhouse.

Vanessa jerked.

May you like

Glass exploded behind her.

Then someone in the darkness yelled, “Both of you, get down!”
