Chapter 13 - The Brake Line

I laughed when Adrian said it.
Not because it was funny.
Because my mind rejected it.
“My death?”
“Daniel, your car accident last November wasn’t an accident.”
The room went silent.
Seven months earlier, my SUV had lost braking power on a mountain road. I survived because I hit a gravel runoff lane and buried the front end in a barrier.
The dealership blamed a defective brake hose.
Adrian put a repair invoice on the table.
“Graham paid the mechanic who inspected it.”
Police immediately seized my vehicles.
Within hours, forensic technicians found tool marks on the replacement hose in my current SUV.
Someone had tampered with that one too.
The detectives stopped treating Vanessa as a missing witness.
She became a fugitive suspect.
Graham Sloane was arrested at his office before sunset.
Vanessa remained gone.
That night, I sat on Emma’s bed while she drew circles on my palm.
“Are we safe now?” she asked.
“I’m making us safer.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
Seven years old, and already too smart for comforting lies.
I swallowed. “Not completely. But you’re not alone.”
She nodded.
Then she said, “Noah was crying before he was on the stairs.”
I looked at her. “You heard him?”
“I saw him.”
My pulse quickened.
“Tell me exactly what happened.”
Emma took a breath.
She had been coloring in the upstairs hall when Vanessa carried Noah out of the nursery.
Vanessa put him on the fourth step.
He started crying.
Emma ran toward him.
Vanessa grabbed Emma’s arm and whispered, “Don’t touch him.”
Then Vanessa walked into my office.
Emma tried to lift Noah but got scared she might drop him.
So she sat one step below him and waited.
When she heard my car outside, Vanessa rushed back, moved Emma away, and climbed above Noah.
“She told me if I talked, you’d think I did it,” Emma said.
I pulled her into my arms.
“I believe you.”
She started crying against my chest.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
Vanessa’s voice came through, calm and clear.
“Put Emma on the phone.”
I stood.
“No.”
May you like
A pause.
Then Vanessa said, “Daniel, if you want the original camera file, you’ll do exactly what I say.”
