Chapter 5 - The Empty Safe

The safe held three things that mattered.

My late wife’s jewelry.

The original Hale family trust documents.

And a sealed letter Laura had written for Emma before she died.

When I opened the steel door, the jewelry was there.

The trust documents were not.

Neither was Laura’s letter.

I stood staring at the empty shelf until Marcus said my name twice.

Vanessa appeared in the office doorway.

“You’re searching my things now?” she asked.

“Your things aren’t in my safe.”

“What are you talking about?”

“The trust documents are gone.”

She crossed her arms. “Maybe you moved them.”

“And Laura’s letter.”

For half a second, something flickered in her eyes.

Emma saw it too.

“My mommy’s letter?” she asked.

Vanessa looked at her. “I don’t know anything about a letter.”

Emma’s face went pale.

I stepped between them. “Go upstairs with Marcus.”

“No.”

“Emma.”

“She knows.”

Vanessa snapped, “Enough.”

Emma flinched again.

I turned so fast Vanessa took a step back.

“You do not raise your voice at her.”

Her eyes filled with tears on command. It was so quick I almost admired it.

“This is insane,” she whispered. “You’re turning me into a monster because Emma is jealous.”

“Where are the documents?”

“I don’t know.”

“Where is Laura’s letter?”

“I don’t know.”

I called the police.

That was when Vanessa stopped crying.

“You really want strangers digging through this family?” she asked.

“I want the truth.”

She gave me a long look.

Then she said, “Careful what you ask for.”

Two officers arrived forty minutes later. They took statements, photographed the safe, and asked Vanessa if she would consent to a search of her room.

She smiled politely.

“No.”

While they were downstairs, Emma pulled me into her bedroom.

She shut the door and went to her closet.

From inside one of her winter boots, she pulled a folded piece of paper.

“I found this under Vanessa’s bed last week.”

It was a photocopy of the Hale trust.

One paragraph had been highlighted in yellow.

If Daniel Hale dies before remarriage, all controlling interest transfers equally to his surviving children.

If Daniel Hale dies after legal marriage, the surviving spouse serves as interim trustee until the youngest beneficiary turns twenty-five.

At the bottom, in Vanessa’s handwriting, were four words.

Wedding must happen first.
