Chapter 18 - Laura’s Final Warning

The envelope was old, yellowed at the edges, and still sealed.

Inside was a single sheet of paper and a key.

Daniel,

If someone comes after the children, go to First Harbor Bank, box 417. Do not call Graham. Do not call Adrian. Bring Rachel Kim if she is still practicing. She is the only person I fully trusted with the revised documents.

I looked at Rachel.

“You knew?”

Her eyes widened. “Not about the box.”

We went immediately.

Inside safety deposit box 417 were the original revised trust, Laura’s financial evidence, and a notarized statement detailing Graham’s theft.

There was also a second document.

A letter appointing Rachel as independent successor trustee if I died before both children reached adulthood.

Vanessa would never have controlled a dollar.

Her entire plan had been built around an outdated clause.

Rachel let out a slow breath. “Laura protected you better than any of us knew.”

The evidence in the box gave federal prosecutors what they needed.

Graham’s shell companies were frozen within forty-eight hours.

Adrian entered a cooperation agreement.

Caleb was charged separately for the greenhouse shooting and the child-endangerment conspiracy.

Vanessa faced her own charges.

Still, the hardest part was not legal.

It was telling Emma that adults could love her and fail her at the same time.

One evening she asked, “Did you fail me too?”

I didn’t hide behind being her father.

“Yes.”

She looked surprised.

“I didn’t see what was happening. I believed things that were easier to believe. I’m sorry.”

“Are you going to do it again?”

“I’ll make mistakes again. But I won’t ignore you again.”

She considered that.

“Okay.”

Kids are cruelly generous sometimes.

Noah healed from the staircase incident without injury. The doctors found no evidence he had been drugged. We changed every lock, every password, every camera account.

For the first time in weeks, I thought maybe the worst was behind us.

Then Marcus called from the security room.

“You need to see this.”

On screen was archived footage from the night Laura died in hospice care at home.

The date was four years old.

At 11:48 p.m., forty minutes before the nurse recorded Laura’s death, Graham Sloane entered our house.

At 11:51, he walked toward Laura’s room.

And at 11:53, the camera feed went black.
