Chapter 3 - A Story Already Written

I didn’t sleep.
At 1:13 a.m., Noah finally settled in the bassinet beside my bed. Emma slept curled on the other side, still holding her fox.
I sat in the dark and searched my email for Mrs. Cole.
There it was.
SUBJECT: URGENT BEHAVIORAL CONCERN - EMMA HALE.
Vanessa had sent it three hours before I got home.
Before I found Noah on the stairs.
I opened the message.
She wrote that Emma had become “increasingly jealous of the baby,” that she had “made disturbing comments,” and that Vanessa feared for Noah’s safety.
Then I read the last line.
Today, Emma finally acted on those feelings.
My pulse kicked.
The email was timestamped 3:42 p.m.
Security footage showed Noah still inside the playpen at 4:08.
Vanessa had accused Emma of hurting him twenty-six minutes before the missing section of video even began.
I read it twice, then a third time.
At 6:30, I found Vanessa drinking coffee at the kitchen island.
“You emailed Mrs. Cole at 3:42.”
She looked at me over the rim of her cup. “What?”
“You said Emma hurt Noah.”
Her eyes sharpened. “She scared him earlier.”
“That’s not what you wrote.”
“Daniel, you’re exhausted.”
“Don’t.”
She set the cup down. “Don’t what?”
“Tell me I didn’t read what I read.”
For the first time, the softness left her voice.
“Emma has problems.”
“She’s seven.”
“She hates me.”
“She’s seven.”
“She hates Noah.”
I stepped closer. “You sent an accusation before anything happened.”
Vanessa’s face went still.
Then she said, “You know what your problem is? You feel guilty about Laura, so you let Emma control everything.”
Laura.
My late wife.
Emma’s mother.
The name landed between us like broken glass.
I said, “Leave her out of this.”
Vanessa leaned forward. “I’m the only person in this house willing to say what everyone else sees.”
A floorboard creaked behind me.
Emma stood in the hallway.
Vanessa saw her and instantly changed expression.
“Sweetheart,” she said gently, “we’re just talking.”
Emma’s eyes moved to me.
Then she said, “Daddy, she told me you would send me away if I told you.”
My hands went numb.
“Send you where?”
May you like
Emma’s voice cracked.
“To the place for bad kids.”
