Chapter 12 - Before Vanessa

Adrian agreed to talk only with his attorney present.

We sat in my library while two detectives recorded everything.

He looked older than I remembered. Thinner. Afraid.

“Laura came to me six weeks before she died,” he said. “She thought money was being moved out of a dormant family account.”

“What account?”

“The Hale Legacy Fund.”

I stared at him. “That fund was closed before I inherited the company.”

“That’s what you were told.”

He slid a folder across the table.

Inside were transfers totaling $8.4 million.

All approved using credentials tied to my father’s former chief financial officer, Graham Sloane.

Graham had also been the executor who introduced me to Vanessa at a charity dinner five years earlier.

I felt the room tilt.

“Vanessa works for him?”

Adrian shook his head. “At first, maybe. Then she started working for herself.”

He explained that Laura had discovered the transfers while updating the trust. She recorded a warning for me, but died before she could finish documenting everything.

Adrian panicked.

Instead of going to the police, he copied the files and disappeared.

“Coward,” I said.

He lowered his eyes. “Yes.”

“Then why come back now?”

“Because Vanessa found me.”

He said she had spent two years trying to locate Laura’s missing evidence. She believed the original trust still gave a surviving spouse control. If she married me before the fraud surfaced, she thought she could bury the accounts, control the estate, and push Emma out as unstable.

“And Noah?” I asked.

Adrian’s face tightened.

“She didn’t plan for Noah.”

“What does that mean?”

“When the clinic contacted you about the final embryo, Vanessa realized Laura had created another beneficiary.”

My hands went cold.

Noah had not been an accident of paperwork.

I had chosen to proceed with the last embryo after months of grief, believing I was honoring a decision Laura and I had made together.

Vanessa encouraged me.

Supported me.

Held my hand through the transfer process with the surrogate.

All while knowing another Hale heir weakened her plan.

Adrian whispered, “After Noah was born, she told Graham the timeline had to move faster.”

I looked at him.

“What timeline?”

May you like

He didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said, “Your death.”
