Chapter 1 - You Wanted Proof

The classroom went silent before Staff Sergeant Ben Reed said a single word.
One second, Ms. Harrow was holding Clara Reed's crushed blue project folder over the trash can.
The next, a United States Marine stood in the doorway with a Belgian Malinois at his left leg.
Clara's pencil stopped in the middle of a word.
Her face changed first.
"Dad?"
She said it so softly that Ben almost missed it.
Scout heard her. His ears shifted forward, and his tail gave one restrained sweep before he settled again at heel.
Ms. Harrow looked from Ben's field gear to the dog, then to the folder in her hand.
Twenty-two third-graders watched her do the math.
Ben stepped inside. His boots made two quiet sounds against the polished floor. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't glare. He didn't touch the rifle secured safely against his gear.
He only looked at the red words across Clara's title page.
NOT VERIFIED.
Then his eyes moved to the drawing beneath it.
A tan-and-black dog. Pointed ears. A pale mark above the right ear.
Scout turned his head.
The real scar was there.
Ms. Harrow's fingers loosened around the folder.
"Mr. Reed," she began.
"Staff Sergeant Reed," Ben said, not correcting her so much as stating a fact. "But Ben is fine."
Clara stood halfway, unsure whether she was allowed to leave her desk.
Ben noticed that hesitation. It hit him harder than the red ink.
His daughter had always run to him.
Now she was waiting for permission.
He removed one glove and opened the sealed document pouch clipped inside his vest.
"You wanted proof."
Ms. Harrow swallowed.
Ben drew out a folded sheet bearing an official letterhead, but before he could open it, the intercom snapped alive above the whiteboard.
"Ms. Harrow, please send Clara Reed to the principal's office immediately. Her father is not authorized to be on campus. Security has been called."
Every child looked at Ben.
Clara's face went white.
Ben slowly folded the document again.

"Interesting," he said.
Then someone locked the classroom door from the hallway.
