Chapter 15 - The Empty House List

There are moments when anger becomes too large for noise.
Ben reached one of those moments.
He did not shout.
He did not move toward Keene.
He simply sat very still and asked, "Was my house on the list?"
Keene looked away.
That was answer enough.
Detective Cole demanded the truth.
Keene finally gave pieces of it.
Hale had paid for "occupancy intelligence"—which homes were likely to have one parent deployed, which children stayed with grandparents after school, which families had recently changed emergency contacts.
Keene insisted he believed the data would be used for home-security marketing.
Nobody believed him anymore.
"Why alter the records?" Dr. Voss asked.
"To hide the exports. Some fields had to be changed so the audit reports would not match the files Hale received."
"You marked me dead?"
Keene rubbed both hands over his face.
"Rachel did the edits. I gave her credentials."
Ms. Harrow's voice shook. "And you let me humiliate a child to protect your audit trail."
Keene said nothing.
Cole's phone rang.
She answered, listened, then looked at Ben.
"We need to contact your mother. Now."
His heart slammed.
"Why?"
"A patrol unit checked your residence because of the data list. The front door shows signs of tampering."
Ben was already calling Margaret.
No answer.
Again.
No answer.
He called Clara's tablet.
Nothing.
The room seemed to narrow around him.
"They left twenty minutes ago," he said.
Cole was moving before he finished. "I'll dispatch units to Margaret's house and your route."
Ben called again.
This time someone answered.
No voice.
Just breathing.
"Clara?"
A rustle.
Then his daughter's whisper.
"Dad?"
Ben shut his eyes for half a second.
"Where are you?"
"Grandma's car."
"Is Grandma with you?"
"She's outside."
"Outside where?"
Clara's whisper became smaller.
"Our house. She said the front door was open. Scout started growling at the hallway."
Ben's blood ran cold.
"Clara, listen to me. Lock the car doors. Do not get out."
May you like
A dull sound came through the phone.
Then Clara breathed, "Dad... Scout just ran inside."
