Chapter 19 - The Assembly

The district wanted to cancel the Veterans Day assembly.
Ben agreed with every safety reason.
Clara did not.
She sat at Margaret's kitchen table with her repaired blue folder in front of her and listened as adults discussed threats, police plans, and legal advice.
Finally she said, "Can I talk?"
Everyone stopped.
"I don't want to go because of the bad man," she said. "But I also don't want him to decide what I get to do."
Ben felt the sentence in his chest.
"You don't have to prove anything to anybody."
"I know."
She touched the page with Scout's drawing.
"I just wanted to read my paragraph."
The district made a compromise.
The public assembly was canceled. A smaller student program would be held in the secured gym with police present, no outside visitors, and a livestream for families.
Monday morning, Clara stood behind the curtain in a clean pink shirt holding her folder.
Ms. Harrow waited beside her.
The teacher had been placed on administrative leave during the investigation, but Clara had asked for her to come.
"Why?" Ben had asked.
Clara shrugged. "Because she needs to hear it too."
At 10:27, Clara walked to the microphone.
Ben watched from the side of the gym. Scout lay at his feet.
Clara began.
"My real-life hero is my dad. Not because he wears a uniform. Not because he trains Scout. He's my hero because when people are scared, he tries to make them feel safe."
Ben swallowed hard.
"Scout is brave too," Clara continued, "but Dad says being brave doesn't mean you aren't scared. It means you know what matters while you're scared."
At 10:30 exactly, Cole's radio buzzed.
Ben saw her face change.
She walked quickly toward him.
"We have movement at the west service entrance."
Ben looked at Clara.
She was still reading.
Officers closed the gym doors.
A man wearing a maintenance jacket had presented a forged district badge at the outer checkpoint.
Police detained him before he entered.
Victor Hale.
He carried no weapon.
What he carried was worse for his defense: forged IDs, copied school access cards, and a phone containing messages with Keene and Rachel.
Cole exhaled.
"We have him."
Ben turned back to the stage.
Clara finished her paragraph.
The gym erupted in applause.
She smiled through tears.
Then Ms. Harrow stepped toward the microphone.
Ben frowned.
This was not in the program.
May you like
Ms. Harrow unfolded a single sheet of paper.
"Clara," she said, voice shaking, "there is something I need to say in front of everyone."
