Chapter 14 - The Buyer

Detective Cole asked the question slowly.

"Who was the buyer?"

Nora Bell took several seconds to answer.

"A man named Victor Hale. He runs a private security and relocation company."

Ben knew the name.

Not personally.

From a base security briefing.

Hale's company had once held subcontracting work around military housing, but the contract had been terminated after allegations of improper data collection. No criminal conviction. No public scandal big enough to make national news.

Just enough to put the name in a briefing packet.

"What did you give him?" Ben asked.

Nora's breath caught. "I didn't meet him. Martin did."

Keene exploded.

"She's lying to save herself!"

Cole ordered him back into his chair.

Nora kept talking.

"At first it was donor targeting. Families with income. Grandparents who might contribute. Then Martin started exporting emergency contacts and deployment notes. Hale paid more for military households."

David Park looked sick.

"Why?"

"I don't know. Martin said Hale sold relocation services to deployed families."

Ben shook his head. "You don't need a child's custody record to sell relocation services."

Dr. Voss pulled up another report.

"Three of the eleven families reported suspicious contacts in the last month. Insurance calls. Home-security offers. One fake legal service asking for copies of deployment orders."

Ben thought of the woman in white shoes telling Clara not to call him.

"Hale had someone inside the school."

Nora answered immediately. "A woman named Rachel Wynn. She used to work for his company. Martin hired her as a temporary administrative consultant during enrollment week."

Lena gasped. "Rachel. Brown hair. White district sneakers."

Ms. Harrow whispered, "She had access to my office when the copier failed."

The forged handwriting.

The cardigan.

The fake message to Clara.

Pieces aligned.

Cole asked Nora for Rachel's contact information.

"I don't have it," Nora said. "But Martin does. They met last night."

Keene stood so fast the chair hit the wall.

"Enough!"

His face was red.

"You have no idea what you're accusing me of."

Ben looked at him.

"Then explain it."

Keene's anger collapsed into something else.

Defeat.

"I didn't know what Hale was really doing," he said.

Cole stared at him.

"What was he doing?"

May you like

Keene looked directly at Ben.

"Finding houses that were easy to enter."
