Chapter 6 - The Wrong Pickup

The school moved fast once the words "wrong pickup" reached the front office.

Faster than it had moved for Clara.

Ben noticed that too.

Emily Park's father, Master Sergeant David Park, arrived still wearing medical scrubs from the base clinic where he worked after leaving active duty. His daughter had spent the night with her aunt, he explained. The aunt had called that morning asking why the school had released Emily to "Uncle Rob" the previous afternoon when David had never authorized anyone by that name.

Emily knew the man. He was the father of another student and had driven her to a birthday party once.

She had not been harmed.

That fact mattered.

It did not make the release acceptable.

Dr. Voss pulled Emily's record.

The authorized pickup list had been edited two days earlier.

Same staff credential family.

Same internal terminal cluster.

Same time window: after 6:00 p.m., when most teachers were gone.

David Park's face tightened.

"Who changed it?"

Keene said, "We don't know yet."

"You told the police there was no system error," David replied.

Everybody looked at him.

"Police?" Dr. Voss asked.

David held up his phone. "I called last night. The school told the officer Emily's file had always listed the man as approved."

Alvarez stared at Keene.

"Who spoke to police?"

Keene's jaw flexed. "The administrative office handled it."

"You handled it," said a voice from the doorway.

The school secretary, Lena Ortiz, stood there holding a thick stack of printed logs.

She looked terrified.

"Mr. Keene told me to print a clean copy of the pickup page and give that one to the officer."

Keene took one step toward her.

"Lena, be very careful."

Ben moved only enough to place himself between Keene and the doorway.

No threat. No raised voice.

Just a boundary.

"She is being careful," Ben said.

Lena's eyes filled with tears, but she kept speaking.

"And there is something else. The edits aren't random. Every family on that list filed a complaint or refused a donation request this semester."

Dr. Voss frowned. "Donation request for what?"

Lena placed the papers on the desk.
