Chapter 2 - The Locked Door

For half a second nobody moved.
Then the metal latch clicked again from the other side.
Ben's training told him to identify exits, count bodies, assess intent. His instincts as a father told him something simpler.
Clara was scared.
He crouched beside her desk, keeping his voice low.
"Hey, kiddo. Look at me."
Her eyes found his.
"Am I in trouble?"
"No."
"She said I lied."
Ben glanced toward Ms. Harrow.
The teacher's face tightened.
"Clara, I never called you a liar."
A boy near the window blurted, "You said she made it up."
Another child added, "And you threw her folder away yesterday."
Ms. Harrow turned sharply. "Class, that's enough."
Ben stood.
"Why is the door locked?"
"School safety procedure," she said too quickly.
Scout stayed beside him, relaxed but alert. Ben noticed the dog wasn't watching the children. He was watching the hallway.
Footsteps approached.
A key turned.
Principal Martin Keene entered with a campus security officer and a woman Ben didn't recognize. Keene was in his fifties, polished shoes, expensive tie, smile built for fundraisers.
"Staff Sergeant Reed," he said, as if they had already spoken. "We appreciate your service. But you entered a restricted campus area without proper clearance."
Ben reached into a side pocket and held out a visitor badge.
"Front office issued it at 8:07."
The security officer looked at Keene.
Ben continued. "I was escorted here by your secretary. She told me you personally approved the visit."
Keene's smile disappeared for one beat.
The woman beside him stepped forward. "I'm Dr. Elaine Voss, district student services. We received a concern involving military-related material presented by a minor."
Ben stared at her.
"Military-related material? She drew her father and a dog."
"She used operational language," Ms. Harrow said. "Terms no eight-year-old should know."
Clara's small voice came from behind Ben.
"He taught me what 'handler' means."
Keene ignored her.
He held out his hand. "We'll take the documents now."
Ben didn't give them to him.
"First," he said, "I want to know why my daughter's school record says I am deceased."
Ms. Harrow went still.
Keene's hand dropped.
Clara whispered, "What?"
May you like
Ben turned toward the principal.
"Because that's what your front office showed me five minutes before I walked in here."
