Chapter 5 - Eleven Children

By 9:10 a.m., Room 3B was no longer a classroom.

It was a witness room.

Dr. Voss moved the students to the library with another teacher, but Clara refused to leave until Ben promised he would still be there when she came back.

"Pinky promise?"

He hooked his little finger around hers.

"Marine-grade pinky promise."

That earned the smallest smile.

When the children left, Ms. Harrow sat at her desk and covered her face with both hands.

"Eleven?"

Dr. Voss nodded. "Eleven military-connected students had parent-contact data edited in the last six weeks. Five were marked inactive. Three had custody flags changed. Two had email addresses replaced. Clara's father was listed as deceased."

Ben felt heat move through his chest.

"Who benefited?"

Keene folded his arms. "That's an irresponsible question."

"No," Ben said. "It's the first responsible question anyone has asked."

Alvarez closed the classroom door, this time from the inside. "Principal Keene, until district IT arrives, nobody touches the computers."

Keene stared at him. "You work for me."

"I work for the district."

Ms. Harrow suddenly stood.

"The hero projects."

Everyone looked at her.

She opened a drawer and pulled out a stack of grading sheets.

"The assignment was called Real-Life Hero. Students had to interview someone they admired. Most chose parents or grandparents." She flipped pages. "Three of the military kids had projects challenged for verification. Clara. Tyler Mason. Emily Park."

"Why?" Ben asked.

Ms. Harrow looked ashamed. "Mr. Keene sent me a list of families requiring additional verification because of 'identity inconsistencies.'"

"And you believed him."

"I believed the principal."

Ben's expression stayed controlled, but his voice sharpened.

"My daughter believed you."

Ms. Harrow looked toward the trash can.

That one sentence broke through her defenses.

"I was wrong," she said.

Keene scoffed. "This is turning into theater."

Then Alvarez's radio crackled.

"Officer Alvarez, front office. We have a parent here asking why his daughter was released yesterday to a man not listed on her approved pickup list."

Alvarez froze.

Ben looked at Dr. Voss.

"Which child?"

The radio answered before she could.

"Emily Park. Third grade."

May you like

Ms. Harrow went pale.

"Emily was absent today."
