Chapter 9 - Smoke in the Hall

The alarm turned the school into motion.

Teachers moved children toward exits. Doors opened. Shoes squeaked. Voices rose.

Ben's first thought was Clara.

"Library."

Alvarez nodded. "Go."

Ben moved fast but controlled, Scout tight at heel. He did not run through children. He did not push. He followed the evacuation flow until he saw Clara near the side doors holding hands with Molly.

The second she saw him, she broke formation.

"Dad!"

He caught her against his chest.

"I'm here."

"Scout too?"

Scout pressed his shoulder gently against her leg.

"Scout too."

Outside, students gathered by grade level across the field. Thin smoke curled from a vent near the administration wing.

No flames were visible.

Firefighters arrived within minutes.

Keene stood near the parking lot arguing with a district official.

Ms. Harrow approached Ben with the battered blue folder tucked under her arm.

"I saved it."

Clara looked at it, then at her teacher.

"After you threw it away."

Ms. Harrow flinched.

"Yes. After I threw it away."

She crouched to Clara's level. "I was wrong. And saying I was following instructions doesn't fix that."

Clara hugged Ben's side and said nothing.

A firefighter crossed the field toward Alvarez.

"No electrical fire. Somebody discharged a small extinguisher into the server closet and smashed the backup drive cabinet."

Dr. Voss's eyes widened. "Was anything taken?"

"One drive bay is empty."

Keene immediately spoke. "Then your evidence is gone. This whole situation has become a dangerous misunderstanding."

Ben looked at him.

"You sound relieved."

"I sound concerned for the children."

A voice behind them said, "Good. Then you'll be concerned about this."

Lena Ortiz held up a portable hard drive.

Keene's face changed.

Lena's hands shook.

"Last month I started copying the nightly administrative backups because files kept disappearing after complaints. I didn't know why. I just knew it felt wrong."

Dr. Voss stared at the drive.

"Where was that stored?"

"Not in the server closet."

Keene took a step toward her.

"Lena, you have stolen confidential district data."

"Maybe," she said. "But I also copied the security camera archive from your office hallway."

Keene stopped breathing for a second.

Lena looked at Ben.

"And last night, someone carried a box out of his office at 11:43 p.m."

"Who?" Ben asked.

May you like

Lena's voice dropped.

"Ms. Harrow."
