Chapter 10 - The Door With No Handle

The words SARAH IS HERE could have meant a dozen things. My heart chose the only one I wanted to believe.
“Did they find her?”
“Not yet,” Ruiz said. “There was a second exit behind the storage racks. Someone cleared out recently.”
An evidence photograph showed Sarah's first initial beneath the message, followed by three numbers: 4-1-7.
Four-seventeen. Emily's birthday was April seventeenth. Sarah had used the numbers for old passwords, luggage locks, and the combination on a little red bicycle lock.
I told Ruiz. She passed the information to the team.
In the morning, an investigator reported finding a locked steel cabinet in the warehouse. The code 417 opened it. Inside were account ledgers, placement forms, a second flash drive, and a list of names and payments.
The list included Sheriff Brice.
It also included Sarah.
Rachel looked up when Ruiz read that. “What do you mean Sarah's name is there?”
I could hardly speak. “She was on the payroll?”
“The records show monthly payments to an account in her name,” Ruiz said. “That doesn't establish whether she knew about them.”
I remembered our divorce, the resentment we carried, the things we'd said in court because we were angry. I did not want to repeat the old mistake of believing the worst before hearing an explanation.
Still, the numbers were real.
At the hospital, Emily finally asked to take a shower. I waited outside the bathroom while she sang two broken lines of an old cartoon theme. Hearing her sing made me lean my forehead against the wall.
When she came out, she gave me a damp folded paper she'd kept hidden in the hem of her pajama pants.
“Mom told me not to open this until you were here.”
The paper held a hand-drawn map of the house and yard. A dotted line ran from the garage past the pool to the old storm-drain easement beyond the back fence.
